Have we got so engrossed in our race to win a rat race that we have forgotten to live? Are we just existing? If yes, my dear friends we seriously need to pause for a minute or two and think seriously. I mean, what’s the point in going through your daily schedules and still not being happy deep within?
Anne of Green Gables is a book which teaches you to live. In this book, there is a girl whose name is Anne, and she lives in a place called Green Gables with middle-aged siblings, Marilla & Matthew Cuthbert. They live at Green Gables, their farm in Avonlea, and decide to adopt a boy, young enough to give him a good home & education &old enough to help Matthew with the farm.
But somehow, with sheer luck & a twist of fate, the person that arrives at their station is a strange little girl- Anne Shirley. Now, Anne is no ordinary girl alright. She is very imaginative, she can make you see life as what it isn’t and make you ignore what it is.
Yeah, she is a big chatterbox, loves to express herself a bit too much, which sometimes gets her in trouble, she is devoted, intelligent, bright & with a slight temper!
However, Matthew’s appeals & Anne’s vivid and lively nature soften Marilla a little, and she gives in. Then begins the wonderful story of how Anne begins to grow, learn; and create bonds that shall last for a lifetime. It sounds boring, right? That’s what’s gonna happen here, just a little girl growing up. Maybe a few quarrels and friendships and schools and games! No suspense or thrill or adventure or romance.
Don’t you think, in our unknown quest of all these, we tend to miss out on little things that give not just happiness but over hundreds of emotions? That’s what the book is all about!
Finding romance in nature, feeling the magic of poetry in fields and listening to stories in the winds, going through adrenaline shoots in meeting someone for the first time; that someone who you feel shall be your best friend yet being nervous and the best of all, happiness in our relationships. The best thing is, families aren’t just born, they can be made too! That’s what Anne does with everyone she meets; except one person, a very special person, her arch-nemesis! Here is one interesting piece-
“Do you never imagine things different from what they really are?” asked Anne wide-eyed.
“No.”
“Oh!” Anne drew a long breath.
“Oh, Miss—Marilla, how much you miss!”
“I don’t believe in imagining things different from what they really are,” retorted Marilla. “When the Lord puts us in certain circumstances He doesn’t mean for us to imagine them away.”
Of course, the story isn’t as smooth as it sounds. There are lots of adventures and mishaps Anne undergoes; her imagination, daydreaming and impulsiveness; not to mention her stubbornness attracts lots of trouble for her.
But she keeps up with them, saying there is still hope for tomorrow
“Because tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet!”
The novel takes you through a roller coaster of emotions- happiness, sorrow, anger, fear, anxiety & every emotion you can name of.
And that’s just the first part!
Yes! Anne of Green Gables is the 1st part of the 8 novel series, and each one of them is more beautiful than the others; as we live every stage of life with Anne and her family and friends, school, college, romance, marriage, kids & every element.
So, do give this book a try on a nice Saturday evening when you just want to relax and enjoy the twilight! And just pause & live with this lovely little girl who is bound to win your hearts!
